Gone are the days of quiet office spaces, formal slacks and terrible filter coffee. Research has shown that nearly half of all workers will be Millennials in the next two years. And with almost 56 million Millennials employed or looking for work, employer’s focus will shift from billable hours to concentration, productivity and performance. Not only are millennials making up the workforce, they are starting up their own businesses and companies comprising of teams of remote workers.

It has become acknowledged and accepted that remote workers can now outperform office employees, and this has started trending in the digital media professions as well as in tech and finance companies.

Last year’s most trending topic was in fact – the future of the working world. The most debated point was what impact technology will have on job opportunities, skills and remuneration. McKinsey Global’s research shows us how technological advances are shaping “how we work, where we work and the skills we need to be productive in the ever-changing workspace.

Before, employees may have struggled to engage meaningfully with their work. Now remote employees are being defined as “emotionally and psychologically” attached to their work and work spaces.

Looking closely at the dynamics of workplaces around the world, not much has changed – except for the age and productivity of employees. While millennial workers are assumed to be synonymous with ping pong tables and juice bars, this generation has been the driving force behind workplace change – especially since they are as inclined as older generations to workplace contentment. Gimmicky-designed office spaces, fun past-times and office ‘perks’ are no longer sought after. With an increase in office employees being unable to concentrate at their desks, research has shown the benefits of remote work.

This works only because the advent and advances of technology allow us to communicate in real time despite spatial and temporal limitations.

Team members want to communicate with their colleagues and supervisors often and effortlessly without the bureaucracies’ formal office spaces necessitate.

Flexibility will play a major role in millennials and generation-x’s decision to accept or decline a job. An increasing amount of jobs are allowing ‘flexi-time’ and work scheduling. All employees require to be engaged and encouraged on a daily basis to produce quality not quantity.

With physical workspaces becoming more isolating, digital offices encourage collaborative opportunities, especially with a new focus on social tools and ever-changing communication and monitoring platforms. This enables development opportunities and employees can learn from colleagues all over the world.

Unfortunately, while 2/3 employees would prefer to work from home or other locations, less than half are given the opportunity to do this. The future will be faceless. The future will be scheduled.
